With COVID-19, our efforts to recruit paddlers and build the club have had to be put on hold for the time being. While we learn more about this virus and how it is transmitted, we are hoping that we can safely consider providing beginners and novice paddlers access to training and equipment before the end of summer. We will follow the CDC and other State guidelines should we feel it is safe to begin offering paddling lessons in very small groups with physical distancing and face masks required when not paddling.
In the meantime, we’ve been working on club equipment. The club trailer now has closed cell foam on the racks and new rope tie downs. We’ve also created boat covers for several of the most exposed sprint boats.
Two “Lightning” K1s (single kayaks) have been purchased from a club in Florida thanks to a $500 donation from our club treasurer Ed Goldthwaite, another donation from coach Drew Story, and with a matching donation for Drew made by Patagonia.
When the National team’s boat trailer returns from Atlanta to San Diego in August, these boats for beginners will come with it. We’re very much looking forward to having these more stable craft for our new paddlers to use! We hope to be able to purchase a similarly stable C1 (single canoe) model in the near future.
