The sport of flatwater or sprint canoe and kayak has been in the Olympic games since the Berlin Olympics of 1932. It was a demonstration sport prior to that as early as the 1924 Paris games. The distances raced in the Olympics have changed over time, as well as the number of races permitted. Today, races in the Olympics are 200, 500 and 1000 meters and at the World Championships races are over 5000, 1000, 500, and 200 meter distances. Men and women race both kayaks and canoes but not always the same distances.
