For our club, winter is a time for endurance activities and refining of long term goals. Our club members have been taking part in some distance races in San Diego and Newport, with peaking goals set for this summer’s Olympic Hopes Regatta trials in June, and the Nationals in August. The coaches and Board of Directors have been looking at our recruiting goals. We are going to try something…

Spring and early summer are the primary recruiting times of new athletes for our club. While one can indeed paddle year round in southern California, the water in the Ventura Harbor gets cold enough that only the very hardy would consider a sport where one is likely to be swimming a fair amount of the time at the start. Just before our local school district went on Spring Break…

This Fall, we finally got club members to a race! The Off Da Couch race in Newport Beach, hosted by the Newport Aquatic Center in honor of Sam Couch, gave our club an opportunity to do a short distance race in flat water with a large group of competitors in singles of all kinds. There were 100 boats finishing and most of our club members took home a medal and more importantly…

The club did not send any paddlers to the Nationals at Nathan Benderson Park this summer. This choice was made mostly because it’s an expensive trip to get an athlete to Sarasota, Florida. To go to Nationals, one must consider airfare (or gas & time), car rental, spending a minimum of five days in a hotel, money on race fees, and either paying to trailer/carry your own boats to the race or renting…

Weather has impacted our paddling ability a great deal this winter with California getting a much needed supply of rain. Unfortunately, we were also impacted by a sewage spill that contaminated the Harbor and surrounding beaches for several weeks, too. While California is known for having warm and mild winters, cold ocean waters and even colder winds are especially dangerous conditions for…

For much of the late summer and early fall, the club had three workouts a week with solid attendance from all of our beginners. As the water has gotten cold(er) again, and we no longer have much sunlight after 4pm, we’ve cut our water workouts to be only on the weekends. Currently, we paddle on Sunday mornings for an hour or so and have plans for other cross training activities with the club.

The re-building of the club continues — here’s our update for this Spring of some of the work done and the next steps and plans for the Ventura Canoe & Kayak Club. As noted in the Fall update, the club was gifted with a small boat trailer. With the assistance of Chris Figureida from Cycle for Heart, this small trailer has been transformed into a lightweight sprint canoe and kayak trailer.

A short update from Drew here. It has been awhile since the status of the club organization has been shared, but here’s what’s been going on and what’s coming up for anyone who might be curious. By the way, we’ve had a few inquiries lately, too, so that’s good! The next phase of the club’s rebirth will be to gain permission to place a container at Marina Park for boat storage…

The Ventura Olympic Canoe Club has always prided itself on being innovative and willing to try new things in terms of training and equipment; we’re not afraid to experiment. In fact, it’s pretty much a guarantee that what we did for a training program last year will not be the same in the coming year, even if we felt the last year was highly successful. We believe that to be a winner…
